在1999年的Eminem《The Slim Shady LP》中，同样来自底特律的Royce 5'9''在倒数第二曲“Bad Meets Evil”登场，一举盖过在整张专辑里表现堪称疯狂的Eminem，也让大家认识到他的实力。三年之后，Royce Da 5'9''终于发行了自己的个人专辑《Rock City》。和Eminem一样，Royce Da 5'9''是一个非常强的battle MC，但乐迷对他是否有能力扛起整张专辑还是心存疑虑的，不过《Rock City》上市后就彻底解决了大家的疑惑。

作为20世纪90年代末涌现出来的MC，Royce Da 5'9''一直以“底特律之王”自称，他也确实有这个实力，Royce Da 5'9''他拥有厚实的声音和尖锐的歌词技巧，因此也成为制作人们的最爱，这张《Rock City》的制作阵容可以说是涵盖了主流和地下，既有Eminem、The Neptunes、The Trackmasters这样的主流强人，也有Ayatollah、DJ Mighty Mi这样的地下干将，还有一代宗师DJ Premier，显而易见Premo对Royce Da 5'9''的技巧相当喜爱，在这张专辑中献上了两个beat。总体来说，整张专辑的制作特点就是多样化，各位制作人都有自己的特点，他们分别完成的部分在专辑中基本能够流畅进行，没有太大的风格跳跃。

说到Royce Da 5'9''肯定要提“Boom”，这首歌几乎是我们国内最常见的Hip-Hop乐曲之一，电台放过，夜店放过，就连电视上节目配乐也用过——因为DJ Premier前面的那段闹钟滴答滴答采样的前奏太 过经典了，整首歌也非常流畅（反观这张里另外一首Premo作品“Friends”就不够理想，Whodini的“Friend”采样声音夹在其中显得不太协调。）。而Royce Da 5'9''在这首歌的表现真只能用对着麦克风“喷火”来形容。

毫无疑问，“Boom”是Premo1998年以来最好的作品。此外The Neptunes的制作也算得上一个亮点，“Off The Parole”是他们稍早期的作品之一（《Rock City》并不完全是2002年时录制），当时听起来很是新鲜独特。

而Ayatollah给专辑也献上了唯美的一面，在“Life”中，Royce搭配R&B女歌手Amerie，在优美的采样beat下展现了他的温情脉脉，这首歌是献给他新生的儿子的，他告诉他的儿子，人生中将会有很多艰难痛苦，你要自己去克服他。

The future brings fear and stresses as the year progresses

除此之外Royce Da 5'9''在足够多的地方展示了他的凶狠，和Eminem合作的同名曲“Rock City”就是一例，Royce嘴里不断迸发出凶狠的歌词，如毒蛇吐信一般。遗憾地是，Eminem在这首歌中仅仅贡献了一个过门，并没有完整的一段歌词，这也让那些想再次享受Bad Meets Evil的同场表演的乐迷失望了。这张专辑后不久Eminem就因为Royce跟D12的矛盾而和Royce翻脸，直到今年才重归于好。

Royce的麦克风能力确实值得称道，虽然他的嗓音不算引人瞩目，但多样的flow还是让人折服，尤其是和Twista对彪速度的“Let's Go”，这首歌的采样部分和Onyx“Shut Em Down”（也就是我国说唱团体阴三儿在“我不管”中所使用的beat）极其相似，Royce快速的flow比起以快为特色的Twista也好不落下风，更难得的是在这样的速度下Royce还可以保持语音的清晰，不含糊。

Bad Boy唱片公司旗下的制作人Carlos "July Six" Broady制作的“Who Am I”也是Royce Da 5'9''实力的一个良好展示，顾名思义这首歌就是Royce Da 5'9''介绍自己的，他只用了一段2分钟的长歌词，里面有大量佳句出现如“The only thing that stronger than me is time, and yours is limited/And I'm involved in it 'til you all finished”之类，的确这种歌是Royce Da 5'9''的拿手好戏。

专辑中有几首歌不太理想，过于“南部”（如“Mr Baller”和“Soldier's Story”，后者更是在过门中出现了Cash Money Millionaires们的口头禅Run For It..囧）或是有意向商业化靠拢（如“You Can't Touch Me”）的痕迹非常明显，虽然Royce Da 5'9''对他们的驾驭没有太大问题，但还是有一些遗憾。更让人郁闷的是，这张专辑中确实有一些出彩的采样制作，但这些采样都是被前人用滥的，比如“Life”、比如“Who Am I”，比如前文提到的“Let's Go”。那么总结一下，《Rock City》是一张有不少小问题的专辑，但“Boom”一俊遮百丑，况且Royce Da 5'9''的歌词和说唱技巧都是是那么到位。
